Willow Grace: The Miracle Pup Who Fought to Live
Willow’s journey began before she was even born.
A rescue took in a pregnant mother dog and brought her to a veterinary clinic for a spay. When the vets operated, they discovered she was well into a pregnancy and closed her up. The rescue, without a boarding facility, could not provide a place for her to recover. The clinic wasn’t set up for overnight animal care, either.
With time running out, a concerned vet reached out to find a safe place for the mama dog to await her delivery. Through a chain of connections, that call reached Shelly Crema, the founder of Protect Our Paws.
Shelly stepped in without hesitation, locating a safe space for the mother dog to give birth. What no one expected was just how many lives were about to enter the world—nine puppies in total!
It seemed like a happy ending was unfolding, but at that moment, it was only the beginning.
Something Was Clearly Wrong
At first, the puppies appeared healthy. But soon, troubling signs began to emerge for three of them who showed alarming symptoms. Tests revealed dangerously high calcium levels—something highly unusual, especially in such young dogs.
The situation escalated quickly. Despite efforts to stabilize them, one of the puppies didn’t make it. Another was in critical condition. That puppy was Willow Grace.
Willow’s condition declined. Despite the best efforts, veterinarians couldn’t pinpoint the cause. The pup clearly needed specialist care beyond what the rescue could afford.
Having seen the tough choices faced by underfunded rescues in medical emergencies, Shelly made a life-changing decision: she adopted Willow, knowing it was the only way to provide her with the urgent, expensive medical care she needed.
What followed was more than a month of hospitalization in critical care. Day after day, the outcome remained uncertain. But Willow kept fighting. Weeks of uncertainty finally led to answers. Specialists diagnosed Willow Grace with a rare genetic condition: Juvenile Hyperparathyroidism.
The disease can quickly become fatal without intervention. For Willow, the only option was emergency surgery. Surgeons removed her thyroid and parathyroid glands in a desperate effort to save her life. Thankfully, it worked!
Although Willow survived her ordeal, her journey wasn’t over. Without those crucial glands, she can’t regulate essential bodily functions alone. She now relies on carefully managed, lifelong medication to stay well. She is, in every sense, a miracle!
Finding the Right Home
As Willow Grace recovered, a new challenge surfaced.
After all she had been through, Willow had formed an intense bond with Shelly—so strong that it created tension with Shelly’s other dogs. It became clear that Willow needed a different kind of environment to truly thrive. The search for the right home led Shelly to a dear friend. A dog trainer, he understood exactly what Willow needed.
Now, Willow Grace is exactly where she’s meant to be.
A Pitbull and German Shepherd mix with a big personality, she now lives as part of a structured pack in the desert—running freely, getting dirty, and embracing life with joy. She’s social, playful, and she even helps her dog dad with his trainees.
The puppy who once hovered on the edge of death is now full of life!
Shelly remains an important part of Willow’s world, continuing to support her medical needs and staying closely connected with her adoptive family. Because some bonds don’t end—they simply evolve.
